Overview
This evening lecture series offers a comprehensive exploration of Chiari I Malformations, tailored for an audience of medical professionals, patients, and their families. The program aims to bridge clinical expertise with accessible knowledge, ensuring that all participants leave with a clear understanding of the condition and its management. The session will begin with an overview of the criteria guiding surgical intervention for Chiari I Malformations. Physicians will gain insight into the process of identifying suitable candidates for surgery, including the assessment of neurological symptoms and radiographic findings. The potential risks, benefits, and complications associated with surgical treatment will be discussed in detail, providing families and patients with essential information for informed decision-making. A segment will be dedicated to conservative management strategies, such as pain control, physical therapy, and lifestyle adjustments. Evidence-based approaches will be presented, emphasizing how these modalities can impact patient outcomes and quality of life. The lecture will highlight the importance of individualized care plans and continuous monitoring. Diagnostic imaging, particularly MRI, plays a critical role in the evaluation and treatment planning for Chiari I Malformations. The lecture will clarify how radiographic studies are used to establish diagnosis, monitor disease progression, and determine the necessity for surgical intervention. Technical concepts will be explained in a way that is understandable to both professionals and non-specialists. Finally, the program will address the challenges associated with transitioning care from pediatric to adult providers. Speakers will identify common barriers and share strategies for facilitating a smooth and supportive handoff, ensuring continuity of care for patients throughout their lifespan. Through this lecture series, attendees will deepen their understanding of Chiari I Malformations, enhance their ability to communicate with care teams, and be empowered to make informed treatment decisions that improve patient outcomes at Medical City Dallas.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the proper use of radiographic imaging in the workup in patients with Chiari I malformations.
  2. Discuss the indications for surgical intervention in patients with Chiari I Malformations.
  3. Identify the conservative management strategies that have had the greatest impact on patients with Chiari I Malformations.
  4. Recognize barriers to adult and pediatric transition of care.
